The Signature: Music to lift the dance floor.

Not every couple wants — or needs — live music for the entire day. Some are sourcing ceremony music from an organist already built into their venue. Some are handling cocktail hour with a playlist or a separate string quartet. Some just know, with total clarity, that the one part of the night they actually care about getting right is the dancing. The Signature exists for that couple: a package that puts the full band to work entirely on the dance floor, with nothing else competing for the budget or the band’s attention.

A narrower focus, done deliberately.

Rather than splitting attention across ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing, this package concentrates the full rhythm section and vocalists on a single job: reading the room in real time and keeping a dance floor full from the first song to the last. That narrower scope means the band isn’t managing transitions between four different musical modes over the course of six or seven hours — it’s building toward, and sustaining, one continuous peak.

What that actually requires.

Filling and holding a dance floor for hours isn’t the same skill as playing a good dinner set or a tasteful ceremony arrangement — it’s closer to what a great DJ does, except with the added unpredictability and energy of live musicians reacting to what’s actually happening in the room, song by song, in real time. It means noticing when a song is losing the floor two bars before it visibly does, having the next song ready, and being able to shift genre, tempo, or energy on the fly based on who’s actually dancing rather than sticking to a pre-built setlist regardless of the room’s response.

Where it fits into the day.

The Signature typically slots in after dinner, once toasts and formalities are finished and the night shifts into its open, less-structured phase. Some couples pair it with a separately booked cocktail hour or ceremony musician; others use a DJ or house system for the earlier parts of the day and bring Sway in specifically for the dance set. It also works well layered onto an existing event where a couple wants to swap out DJ-only dancing for a live band without restructuring the rest of their vendor lineup.

The lineup.

Full core band — Keys, bass, drums, guitar, and 3–5 vocalists, with horns or strings added if the room and budget support it, though many Signature bookings run lean and let the rhythm section and vocal energy carry the floor without additional instrumentation.

Your songs, still rehearsed properly.

Even in a dancing-only package, the request list matters — the songs that get a specific group of guests off their seats aren’t always the obvious top-40 picks, and knowing your crowd (family traditions, inside jokes, a song that means something specific to your friend group) helps the band build a set that lands with your actual guests rather than a generic crowd. Anything specific is learned and rehearsed in advance rather than sight-read live.

Coordinating with existing vendors.

Because The Signature is often layered onto a day that already has a DJ, ceremony musician, or other entertainment booked, coordination matters more here than in a single-vendor package. It’s worth mapping out exactly when the band takes over — usually a clean handoff after dinner and toasts — and making sure whoever’s handling sound for earlier parts of the day is aligned on timing, stage space, and power needs. A well-coordinated handoff is invisible to guests; a poorly coordinated one creates an awkward gap or overlap that’s very noticeable. Flagging this early, ideally when you first book, avoids the scramble of figuring it out during the week of the wedding.

Why some couples choose this over a fuller package.

Budget is part of it, but not all of it. Some couples have already found a ceremony musician they love through their venue or officiant, or want a DJ’s flexibility for cocktail hour and dinner because it’s easier to keep background music going continuously without set breaks. The Signature respects that those decisions have already been made and simply slots in for the part of the night where a live band adds the most obvious, tangible value: the moment guests are actually on their feet.

Best for: couples prioritizing dance-floor energy over full-day live coverage, weddings supplementing another vendor’s ceremony or cocktail hour with Sway specifically for the reception dancing, and any couple whose main goal is a packed floor rather than a fully live-scored day.

Less of a fit if: you want the same band carrying you through ceremony, cocktail hour, and dinner as well — in that case, The Intimate or The Classic (depending on guest count) will cover the full day more efficiently than adding a separate dancing-only booking on top of other vendors.

Frequently Asked Questions

First of all, let me say that there are many many “good” wedding bands in Chicago. Any one of these bands have great musicians and vocalists, that have different levels of versatility, and will sound great! That being said, although they may sound great, it will not make them a “great” band for your wedding. Not to say that the band for your wedding shouldn’t sound great, because they definitely should. But, that is only one piece of the puzzle. The biggest factor that sets a great band apart, is their ability to entertain you and your guests. If the singers and musicians are not physically engaged with your party, and are simply playing good music, your guests will get bored after a bit. Trust me! However, if the band is playing great music, and everyone on stage is also engaging with the entire room, you and your guests will not be able to pull yourself from the dance floor. And this is what we specialize in.

Tip: If a band does not offer a way for you to view them live, I would be very hesitant to hire them
